Friday, February 23, 2024: With most of the snow now melted, the tennis and pickleball courts at Dred Scott Playfield are once again open and available for play.
Please be aware of all park rules listed in the City Code including the prohibition of drones and golfing.
Recreational opportunities are enhanced by two privately owned and operated amenities located at Dred Scott Playfields. These two amenities are located in a City park but do have a lease agreement with the City for the space.
The City has installed four Dred and Harriet Scott Interpretive signs, donated by the Minnesota Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, at the park.
In September 2021 a project launched to reconstruct the tennis courts located in the southeast section of the park. The project completely removed the existing fence and playing surface and resulted in a completely new surface with new pavement, fencing and net systems. The court was also reconfigured to include both tennis and pickleball.
In June 2022, the project was completed and four brand new tennis courts and 6 pickleball courts became available for public use.
On Tuesday, August 16, 2022, Park Maintenance staff initiated removal and replacement of the basketball support standard on the southwest corner of the Dred Scott Playfield courts to reset it to vertical. As part of this initiative, all four backboards and rims are also being replaced. The standard that needed resetting will be unplayable for one week following the repair, while the other three hoops will be immediately playable upon completion of backboard installation. Questions? In August, 2022 work began on replacement of all fencing at the four ballfields encircling the wheelhouse structure. The project will replace outfield, backstop, dugout and other fencing on fields 8, 9, 10 and 11. Check out a few photos of the ongoing work below. Questions? Email firstname.lastname@example.org.
