A recent water sample from Penn Lake confirmed the presence of a blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) bloom, which can pose health risks to people and pets.

Residents and lake visitors should:

  • Avoid direct contact with lake water that appears green, scummy or foul-smelling.
  • Keep pets out of the water and prevent them from drinking from the lake.
  • Rinse off thoroughly with clean water if contact occurs.

Blue-green algae can produce toxins that may cause skin irritation, nausea, or more serious health effects if ingested. Children and pets are especially vulnerable.
