Local option sales tax

Sections

On November 7, 2023, Bloomington voters approved a 0.5% local option sales tax to invest $155 million in the City’s Bloomington Forward plan.

The plan supports three major community projects for better health, wellness, athletics and recreation:

  • $100 million for construction of a community health and wellness center.
  • $35 million for infrastructure repairs and renovation at Bloomington Ice Garden.
  • $20 million for improvements to the Nine Mile Creek corridor and Moir/Central parks.

The 0.5% sales and use tax takes effect in Bloomington on April 1, 2024. The tax will be in place for up to 20 years or until funding obligations are fulfilled, whichever comes first. The Minnesota Department of Revenue will administer the tax.

The 0.5% sales tax applies to taxable retail sales made within Bloomington. Local use tax applies when you buy items or services for business or personal use in the local area. Residents and businesses are required to remit the local use tax to the State of Minnesota regardless of where or how the item was purchased. For example, if you buy a taxable item for your business or home from an out-of-state seller who does not charge or collect local sales tax, you will owe local use tax.

More information on registering, calculating, collecting, reporting and filing the tax can be found on this document (PDF) from the Department of Revenue. Specific questions regarding the local sales and use tax should be directed to the Minnesota Department of Revenue. The State is administering and collecting the local sales and use tax on behalf of the City.
