What is the evidence intake/property room?

The Bloomington Police Property Room is staffed by two specialists who are responsible for the intake, secure storage, maintenance, and disposal of evidence, found property, and items held for safekeeping.

The property room ensures an accurate chain-of-custody in the event evidence is needed for court proceedings. For this reason, very few department personnel have access to the property room.

How long are property and evidence held at the Bloomington Police Department?

Safekeeping: Items held for the owner for various reasons, not intended for evidence.

  • Held for 60 DAYS
  • ID and proof of ownership required for pickup

Found property: Items turned over to the Bloomington Police Department, not intended for evidence.

  • Held for 90 DAYS
  • ID and proof of ownership required for pickup

Evidence: Items that may be connected to a crime and may be needed for court.

  • Held until released by the prosecuting authority
  • ID and proof of ownership required for pickup

How can I inquire about found property or pick up my property items?

Appointments are required for all property releases and are available 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Call the property room at 952-563-8843 or send an email to schedule an appointment.

If an individual cannot pick up their item themselves for various reasons, they need to complete and provide us with a notarized Designee Form in order for us to schedule and release the items.

Do any items have different pick-up requirements?

Firearms: To get your firearm back, you must clear a background investigation. Contact Detective Scott Sager at 952-563-8839 or by email to begin the process. When the background investigation is completed, you will be contacted to schedule an appointment. (Note for out-of-state residents: We only ship firearms to law enforcement agencies or certified Federal Firearms Licensed businesses such as gun shops or pawn shops. Ammunition cannot be shipped and will not be included.)

Bicycles: Call the property room at 952-563-8843 or send an email to ensure that we have your bicycle. Please provide one or more of the following items to verify ownership:
