Widget Examples

Sections

This page is demonstrates the available content widgets you'll be using as you continue to build out landing pages and other content areas. Widgets can be added to any page where you see a "Customize this page" button, and they will play an important role as you assemble various pages. A few quick notes:

When we refer to "widgets" we mean these:

Custom widgets

which you will see as available options when adding content to any region or pane. You will also see some additional options up above:

Default widgets

For now, you can largely ignore this first set of options. Many of them are enabled for development purposes only, and eventually, this list will shrink. So for now, focus on the list of custom widgets below (e.g. Add links, Add files).

General tips

There are examples of each available widget type running down the sidebar of this page, but first here are some general notes and tips regarding widgets:

  • Widgets are the best way to assemble landing pages, and in many cases, a lot of your content pages.
  • Many pages may contain a full "body" field, but you can easily add widgets in a sidebar, or to any region, to enhance the page
  • Suggestions includes: lists of related links, handy files, maps, text sidebars, etc. can all help build out a page
  • Most widgets will display nicely in various sizes (with some config changes in some cases)
  • As theming continues we can adjust the sizing of various components as needed (e.g. Small, Medium, Large)
  • Widgets will be themed, both with sensible defaults and also other options (highlight boxes, tabs, accordions, etc.)
  • Widgets can be added now and as the theme continues to evolve it will begin to apply to various widget options
  • Widgets can be created as "re-usable" -- create one widget and use it on multiple pages
  • In addition to the list below, it is likely we will introduce additional widgets based on various use cases but these cover many bases

Here is a brief description of each widget type currently available. These descriptions map to the ordering of the list of widgets running down the sidebar of this page for easy reference:

Add links
Create lists of links (external or internal) -- these are great for creating "quick links" on any page, directing users to more info on your site or elsewhere

Add files
Create collections of downloadable files on any page -- an easy way to assemble lists of handy files and documents for reference.

Add image
Add an image with an optional link to any region of any page -- an easy way to drop images, logos, or other graphics into any region, with links out to internal or external pages.

Add text
A handy way to add text-based sidebars to any region of a page -- can include full HTML/images as desired.

Add map
Add a quick Google map to any region -- easy address picker, and resizable for placement into large or small regions.

Add table
Add configurable table data to any region -- support CSV import. You may want to limit usage but in many cases tabular data is the best method for display.

Add video
Easily drop Youtube videos into any region -- various embed sizes allow you to show small, medium or large videos

Add content list
A powerful widget that allows you to dynamically create lists of content and display them in any region -- default options let you choose by content type, categories, and to set various display parameters. As use cases develop it is likely we will develop additional content list widgets.

Add content item
Easily drop a formatted teaser from one node to any other node on the site -- includes various display options such as whether to include the featured image.

Important note about customizing pages

There is one other important thing to consider when building out pages using widgets:

  • Each page you create starts out in a "default" state with no customization. All of the various display settings are set globally per content type
  • Once you "Customize this page" your node is no longer in a default
  • You can "Reset" a node back to default, but this is a true "reset" -- e.g. if you add a custom text box to page, and then reset, you will lose that text box for good (unless it was set up as a re-usable widget)
  • The same is true of your layout -- if you have chosen a custom layout it will revert back to the default layout upon reset
  • If you get stuck, it is also possible to manually revert individual nodes back to a mostly default state while still maintaining the custom panes you may want to keep
  • Once you get started it is fairly easy to get the hang of but we're happy to help and offer advice along the way.

These widgets are all tested and working, but if you notice trouble or run into any bugs along the way please post to Basecamp and we will address!
