Smoke and CO alarm installation

Sections

You will be contacted within two business days of receiving your request to schedule a specific time for your appointment.

General advice about smoke alarms

  • We recommend replacing your smoke alarms every 10 years, or as recommended by the manufacturer (whichever is sooner).
  • Dust can collect in smoke alarms, causing false alarms. We recommend vacuuming your smoke alarms monthly (as best you can without taking them apart).

Smoke and CO alarm installation assistance (battery operated only)

Please provide the following details
Do you have high or vaulted ceilings?
Are any of your smoke alarms making a "chirping" sound about once a minute?
Do you need help replacing batteries in your smoke alarms?
Our staff will help you install new batteries, but you must supply them. Please have the new batteries on hand when we visit.
Do you need new or additional smoke alarms?

Some locations may be eligible to have one or more battery-powered smoke alarms installed by the City. We will work with you to determine your location's eligibility.

Staff cannot provide or install hard-wired smoke alarms, but we we will assist in plugging in a new (hard-wired) alarm that you supply, if the new alarm uses the same wiring harness or connector as the old alarm.

Is this request due to a recent time-of-sale (TOS) inspection?
BFD will help you install owner-purchased alarms, but is unable to provide them for your entire residence. Please ensure you provide battery-operated alarms in order to receive assistance.
