Optimist Club honors outstanding police staff

The Optimist Club and the Bloomington Police Department recently recognized Detective Kristin Boomer with the Respect for Law Officer of the Year award.

Detective Kristin Boomer, photo top left, was recognized for her professionalism, investigative skill and compassionate service. Since joining BPD in 2006, she has contributed to key initiatives including:

State-level working groups on public safety reform.

Domestic Abuse Fatality Review Board.

ICAC Task Force and trauma-informed investigation training.

Policy development and peer support.

Detective Boomer’s leadership and dedication continue to leave a lasting impact on the department and community.

The Bloomington Police Department also recognized Christine Thelen, top right, as their Civilian Staff Member of the Year. Thelen was honored for her service and commitment to community engagement and internal support. Highlights of her impact include:

Organizing a volunteer event at Feed My Starving Children, resulting in nearly 300 boxes packed—enough to feed 177 children for a year.

Securing a grant for sensory kits to support neurodivergent and nonverbal individuals during police interactions.

Advocating for civilian staff through union representation and workplace support.
