Investing in a healthier Nine Mile Creek

Nine Mile Creek

Restoration work along the Nine Mile Creek corridor is underway and will continue into 2027, bringing improvements to strengthen the creek and surrounding natural areas for years to come.

Contractors will complete streambank restoration and repairs at multiple locations along Nine Mile Creek from Moir Park to Harrison Park, and along the Central Park corridor, during November and December and continuing through the winter.

One of the most significant improvements will be restoring a natural meander, a winding curve, loop or snake-like bend,  to a section of the creek that has straightened over time. Reintroducing the meander will lengthen the creek channel, reduce its slope, improve floodplain connections, restore wetlands and create a valuable in-stream habitat.

These improvements will do more than repair the creek. They also help restore natural processes and create healthier habitat for the plants and wildlife that depend on the corridor.

Other improvements in the location of the re-meander include removing an existing bridge and installing a boardwalk. Boardwalk construction is expected to begin in early 2027.
