Public Living Rooms: An Invitation to Connect

What is a Public Living Room?

A Public Living Room is a space where neighbors can take a break, grab a beverage or a treat, and connect with others in a welcoming, agenda-free environment where everyone belongs. You can come to have a conversation, meet someone new, or simply enjoy being around other people. There are no expectations and no pressure. You just show up as you are. Doing Public Living Rooms in our community is part of the Camerados social movement. We ask everyone to help create a welcoming environment by embracing six simple ideas:

  • It’s okay to be a bit rubbish (not perfect).
  • Don’t fix people, just be alongside them.
  • To be silly is to be human.
  • Mix with folks not like you.
  • We can disagree respectfully.
  • Ask someone who is struggling to help you.

Why was this identified as a need in Bloomington?

In July of 2026, an Appreciative Inquiry was held with Bloomington residents, community leaders, youth and city staff to explore how we can build stronger, more trusted relationships, especially with people who can sometimes be harder to reach. What we heard was a desire for more intentional spaces where people can connect, more opportunities to build neighborhood relationships and community networks, and more face-to-face interaction rooted in kindness. Public Living Room grew out of that conversation. It isn’t another meeting or program. It’s an invitation to connect.

Why is this an important way to build community?

Community is really about relationships. And relationships don’t always happen at meetings or organized events. Sometimes they happen through a simple conversation with someone you’ve never met before. Public Living Room creates space for those moments. It gives people a chance to connect without an agenda or expectation, and those small connections can grow into a stronger sense of belonging and a stronger community.

How can I host a Public Living Room in my neighborhood?

You can reach out to Amanda Crombie, Equity and Inclusion Program Manager. She will provide you with a Public Living Room kit to check out, help promote your event and answer any questions you might have.
