Bloomington's urban forest got a boost thanks to recent tree planting efforts at Civic Plaza.
This spring, Park Maintenance crews planted nine new trees representing three species that have traditionally been found farther south and east of Minnesota. As the region experiences warmer and wetter conditions, these trees are now proving to be a good fit for local landscapes.
The new additions include chinkapin oak, black gum and northern pecan trees. Beyond adding beautiful fall color, the species were selected to increase the diversity of the tree canopy in the city.
A diverse urban forest is more resilient to pests, diseases and changing weather conditions. By introducing a wider variety of trees, Bloomington is helping ensure that its community canopy remains healthy and thriving for generations to come.
The project reflects the ongoing work of Bloomington's Park Maintenance team to strengthen and protect the city's urban forest while planning for future environmental conditions.
