Stay hydrated
- Drink plenty of water.
- Replace salt and minerals you lose when hot with snacks and sports drinks.
Stay cool
- Take breaks in air conditioning or visit a cooling location.
- Wear lightweight, lightcolored, and loose clothing.
- Avoid or limit exercise during the hottest hours of the day (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.).
Prevent heat illness
- Do not leave children or pets in the car.
- Check on neighbors who are elderly, do not have air conditioning, and/or live alone.
- Act fast if someone has symptoms described below.
- Anyone can develop heat illness. Those at greater risk include people who are older, infants, pregnant, have certain medical conditions, or work outdoors.
Signs of heat exhaustion
- Mild headache and/or lightheadedness
- Cool, pale skin (with heavy sweating)
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Muscle cramps, fatigue and/or weakness
What to do
- MOVE to a cooler place
- DRINK cool water or sports drinks
- CALL 9-1-1 if symptoms last longer than one hour
Signs of heat stroke
- Throbbing headache, confusion, seizure, irritability and/or altered/loss of consciousness
- Hot skin
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Core body temperature 104°F or greater
What to do
- CALL 9-1-1 immediately
- MOVE the affected person to shade or a cooler area
- Use cool water or ice packs to COOL them down
