A local Girl Scout troop is making a lasting impact on Bloomington’s pet community through a project focused on care, teamwork and service.

Led by troop leader Jennifer Weideman, the girls have been together since kindergarten and are now in sixth grade. The troop designed and built a Little Pet Library at Bloomington Animal Control, 9920 Logan Ave. S. It offers a place where residents can take or leave pet supplies such as toys, treats and food. All treats and food must be in unopened packaging.

Using money earned through cookie sales and other fundraising, the girls planned the project from start to finish. They created a budget, selected supplies and built, stained and painted the library by hand before working with the City to install it.

“The girls wanted to do something to help the community through animals,” Weideman said. “They wanted to give back in a way that would help both pets and pet owners.”

The Little Pet Library is restocked throughout the year by the troop and community members and remains an ongoing service project for the girls.
