Bloomington, MN — The City of Bloomington is partnering with Electrify Everything Minnesota to help residents learn about and make upgrades to their homes. This program connects homeowners to resources, incentives and expert guidance to support the switch from fossil gas to electric appliances.

Electrifying a home means replacing gas-powered equipment such as furnaces, water heaters and stoves with electric options that use less energy. These alternatives can improve indoor air quality, increase comfort and reduce long-term energy costs.

Bloomington residents can get free help through the Electrify Everything Advisor service. Advisors give advice on what upgrades to do first, how to find financial help and where to find experienced contractors. The program also offers workshops, webinars and demonstrations on the benefits and process of home electrification.

Some common electrification projects include:

  • Heating and cooling: Installing a heat pump to reduce or replace a gas furnace or boiler.
  • Water heating: Replacing a gas water heater with a heat pump water heater.
  • Cooking and laundry: Switching to electric stoves and dryers.
  • Weatherization: Improving insulation and air sealing to save energy and improve comfort.

As Minnesota’s electric grid becomes cleaner, switching to electric appliances has become a great way to reduce residential carbon emissions. A 2023 state law requires all electricity in Minnesota to be carbon-free by 2040. Right now, Xcel Energy reports that 60% of its electricity is already carbon-free.

Electrify Everything Minnesota is managed by the Center for Energy and Environment and supported by the cities of Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Edina, Minneapolis and St. Louis Park, as well as Hennepin County and other nonprofit and foundation partners.
