Kratom

Kratom is a plant-based substance from Southeast Asia and often sold at gas stations, convenience stores, and vape shops (often referred to as “gas station heroin”). It is ingested orally as capsules, chewed, and brewed as a tea.

Health Risks

Kratom’s health impacts differ based upon the amount ingested.

• Low Dose (1-5 grams): Stimulant-like effects (e.g., alertness, physical energy, and talkativeness)
• High Dose (5-15 grams): Opioid-like effects that are more severe (e.g., seizures, addiction, psychosis)

Common side effects include:

• Nausea and vomiting
• Itching
• Sweating
• Dry Mouth
• Constipation
• Increased urination
• Headaches or dizziness
• Drowsiness
• Tremors
• Increased heart rate and blood pressure
• Loss of appetite
• Anxiety

Some products contain concentrated 7-OH, a kratom compound naturally found only in tiny amounts in the plant. Concentrated 7-OH can produce stronger opioid-like effects and may increase the risk of dependence, overdose, and other serious harms.

The U.S. DEA has announced that many high-concentration 7-OH products may become federally controlled substances. If you regularly use these products, talk with a health care provider before the changes take effect. Do not stop suddenly without medical guidance.

Current Use

Poisonings involving kratom have increased dramatically.

In 2025, U.S. poison centers reported 3,434 kratom poisonings, which is a 1,200% increase since 2015.

Laws

As of May 2026, kratom is prohibited in eight states, while many others have adopted regulatory approaches.

As of August 1, 2026, the legal age to purchase and possess kratom in Minnesota is 21, up from 18. It a gross misdemeanor to sell kratom to anyone under 21, and a misdemeanor for anyone under 21 to possess it.

Why is Rising Use Concerning?

Commercial kratom products are not regulated like prescription medications. Product strength, ingredients, and quality can vary widely, and some products have been found to contain contaminants or other drugs.
