Mamie Ruhmann has been a paid-on-call firefighter with the Bloomington Fire Department for nearly five years, joining her brothers Beau and Jesse who have been with the BFD for 10 and 17 years, respectively.

She holds fire science and nursing degrees and has worked as an emergency medical technician and an emergency room nurse.

“Firefighting is a bunch of different jobs requiring critical thinking, focus and figuring out challenges on the fly,” Ruhmann said. “I’m drawn to that.”

“Having a supportive family is what makes this career possible,” Ruhmann said of her husband Michael and her son Sando. Her brother Cole hollers “Go save a life!” when she receives a call whenever he is around.

“Make sure you have working smoke detectors throughout your home and an escape plan set up, especially if you have children living with you or visiting often!”
