You’re invited to a free screening of “The People’s Protectors,” a Twin Cities PBS documentary from Native filmmaker Leya Hale (Dakota/Diné) on Friday, November 13, 6:30 – 8 p.m., in the Schneider Theater, 1800 W. Old Shakopee Road. No registration required and all ages welcome.

The film shares the stories of Native American veterans who served during the Vietnam War and explores the complicated relationship between Native communities and the U.S. government. Marine Corps, Navy and U.S. Army veterans Valerie Barber, Art Owen, Sandy White Hawk and Vince Beyl reflect on military service, their communities and their legacy as Dakota, Lakota and Ojibwe warriors and protectors.

Following the screening, Hale and White Hawk will join attendees for a director’s Q&A about the film and the stories behind it. For more details, visit blm.mn/ifs-protectors.

The event concludes the City’s 2026 indigenous film series presented by the Bloomington Human Rights Commission and Parks and Recreation in partnership with Bloomington Public Schools' American Indian Education Program.
