Now through September, Xcel Energy crews will be installing smart meters at all residences and businesses in Bloomington. Crews started this work in July.

What is a smart meter? A smart meter is an electrical device that measures the electricity consumption of a home or building. It allows for two-way communication between a customer’s electric meter and Xcel Energy. It can help customers better understand how energy is being used and identify specific, measurable actions to make energy-saving improvements to their home
or business.

How will a smart meter be beneficial? Smart meters provide quicker notifications when service is out and more accurate information about when power is restored. Customers will receive detailed energy usage information and pricing plans that can maximize savings. The smart meter works with customers’ My Account.

When will smart meters be installed in Bloomington? Installation is scheduled July – September.

What will it cost to receive a smart meter? The new meters are paid for through Excel’s normal billing process. Customers will not see an additional charge on their bills to pay for the meters. Xcel Energy crews or authorized contractors will never request or accept any payment.
