A little salt goes a long way

Even during the final weeks of winter, it’s important to think about salt use. A dash of salt has a lasting impact on the environment. One teaspoon of salt permanently pollutes five gallons of water. Chlorides from road salt make their way into spaces that harm plants, wildlife and fish.

“Once salt is in the water, it’s not coming out,” Senior Water Resources Manager Bryan Gruidl said.

The City is committed to reducing salt use through anti-icing technology (pretreating roads for weather events) and reducing application. Bloomington residents and businesses can help by using a light touch when applying salt (or better yet, by using sand) and sweeping up extra salt when possible.
