RE: Public Safety Awareness
City of Bloomington Community Members:
The Bloomington Police Department (BPD) is aware that the protests and riots we have seen in Minneapolis and Saint Paul over the past few days may spill over into our city tonight or in the coming days, and we want to reassure our community that our officers are prepared to respond. In the coming hours and days, you may see an increased police presence throughout Bloomington. BPD has added additional staff to monitor the city and we want to advise businesses to prepare for possible damage to property and looting.
As a police department, we will not stifle your right to free speech and assembly, and we are committed to providing residents with the space they need to demonstrate peacefully. However, we want to be clear that we cannot allow anyone to behave unlawfully or destroy property. This behavior threatens the safety of all residents and the stability of our entire community.
As always, we are asking our residents to be aware of your surroundings as you move about the city, and avoid any large groups or large police presence you may see. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Dispatch at 952-563-4900 (non-emergency) or call 911 (for emergencies).
