Meet a Bloomington firefighter

Ryan Petersen has been a firefighter for 17 years. He serves out of Station 1.

Q: What’s your day job?

A: I’m a full-time firefighter in Saint Paul.

Q: What made you want to become a firefighter?

A: I like serving my community and helping out. It’s a very rewarding career. I grew up watching fire trucks drive down Nicollet past my house and I always thought I wanted to do that someday.

Q: What do you like about living in Bloomington?

A: I like it because it’s a well-taken-care-of city that still has a small town feel to it and you’re close to everything the Twin Cities has to offer.

Q: What do you like to do when you aren’t working or volunteering?

A: I like hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, backpacking—most outdoor stuff.

Q: What would you say to someone considering becoming a firefighter?

A: Don’t give up. Always be learning. Never take a day off from learning something that will better you.
