Meet a Bloomington firefighter
Drake Dietz has been a Bloomington firefighter for 13 years out of Station 1. He has served as a captain for the past eight years.
Q: What is your day job?
A: I’m an overnight production manager at a lead foundry.
Q: What do you like to do when you aren’t working or volunteering?
A: I like to spend time with my family, golf, hunt, fish and do anything outdoors. I like traveling. I recently visited my son in Okinawa, Japan.
Q: What made you want to become a firefighter?
A: My dad was a founding member of a fire department in southern Missouri. I spent a lot of time there as a kid. I saw how they were giving back as a team. I wanted to be a part of that. I just happen to be doing it in Bloomington.
Q: What do you like about living in Bloomington?
A: There’s a real sense of community here. My wife and I are very happy with the education our kids received in Bloomington Public Schools. My oldest is in the Marines now and my youngest is at Lake Superior College getting his associate’s degree in fire. He is hoping to join BFD in the future and maybe get a full-time job in fire investigation. I’d like to give a shout out to my family, especially my wife. She has made this all possible with countless missed dinners and time away from my family.
