Bloomington yesterday: Making the grade in elementary school

Fall means back to school. The season brings a bit of nostalgia—meeting old classmates, playing (or watching) football on a crisp day, buying a new outfit or maybe giving an apple to a teacher.

The Bloomington Public School first grade class of 1932 – 1933 posed for a class photo in an era when children wore everything from pressed ties to dusty overalls. Perhaps you know of someone appearing in this class portrait?

Pictured in the top row, third from the left, Connie McCutchan’s full-face grin and confident outlook sets her apart from her classmates. Evidently, McCutchan was a good student. Her fifth grade report card shows many high marks. Teacher Evelyn Sherman penciled in “good worker” and “promoted to sixth.”
