Laura Bohen was selected as the City’s next community outreach and engagement manager in May. She brings with her 12 years of nonprofit experience. Before starting with the City, Bohen was an extension educator and associate professor at the University of Minnesota.
In her time with University of Minnesota extension, Bohen did work at the neighborhood, state and national levels. She is interested in local government because it provides the opportunity to focus on one community and what could be built there over time.
“I’ve seen the impact of what can be accomplished on the local level and I wanted to be a part of that,” Bohen said. “The work I’m most interested in is hands on and community driven, so local government is a great fit.”
In her role, Bohen supports a team of community engagement and outreach coordinators as they build relationships and ensure that community is considered and heard in the development and delivery of City programs and services.
“Community engagement work is relationship based. I’m really looking forward to getting to know community members, councilmembers, the mayor and City staff,” Bohen said. “That’s where the transformational change happens—when we are in relationship and connected to each other. I really enjoy that.”
