Orange Line now fully funded
The Orange Line, a 17-mile bus rapid transit line along the I-35W corridor that will connect Minneapolis, Richfield, Bloomington and Burnsville, is ready to move forward. The Federal Transit Administration authorized full funding for its portion of the Metropolitan Council and Metro Transit project in December.
“This is a really significant line that currently carries 14,000 riders daily using just express service,” said City Traffic Engineer Kirk Roberts. “That’s expected to grow in the future and that’s key for ridership.”
Bus rapid transit is a faster, more efficient bus line thanks to limited stops and required payment before boarding. Construction for the streamlined service will begin in the summer of 2019 and finish up in 2021. The most significant part of the project includes building a tunnel under I-494. Traffic is not expected to be interrupted.
