The City of Bloomington recently received a Sustainable City Award for the implementation of a new bulky item management program. Each year, the League of Minnesota Cities recognizes cities for their work in achieving their sustainability goals by using one or more of the GreenStep Cities program’s 29 best practices.

“Bloomington was specifically recognized for resident involvement in the program’s development and implementation, and for developing an effective solution to the challenge of bulky item management,” said Ellen Biales, the deputy director of Public Works.

The new bulky item management program includes:

  • Every other year spring curbside collection of bulky items for collection as garbage.
  • Regular monthly curbside collection of reusable and recyclable bulky items.
  • An annual recycling drop-off event.
  • Community swap events.

GreenStep Cities

Bloomington participates in Minnesota GreenStep Cities, a voluntary challenge, assistance and recognition program to help cities achieve sustainability and quality-of-life goals.  Bloomington’s sustainability efforts have earned the City Step 5 recognition—the highest level of recognition in the program.
