Welcoming a new community development director
Maintaining and building a thriving community is a priority for the City and one that new Community Development Director Eric Johnson shares. Johnson has an extensive background in urban development and redevelopment, housing, real estate and community leadership and engagement. His experience ranges from federal and local government to nonprofits and private consulting. Most recently, he managed urban redevelopment issues for public, private and nonprofit sectors as the principal of his consulting firm, Urban Regeneration Advisors, and as part of a national consulting network, Tripp Umbach. Johnson earned a doctorate degree in urban affairs and public policy from the University of Delaware, a masters of public administration from Minnesota State University, Mankato and a BA from Washburn University. He is also an alumnus of the Harvard University Graduate School of Design Advanced Management Development Program in Real Estate. Moving forward, Johnson wants to focus on bridging the perception of the east-west divide; emphasizing creative placemaking around the city; encouraging development of things the city doesn’t already have, such as more community coffee shops; focusing on aging neighborhood commercial corridors and addressing affordable housing.
