Hennepin County to purchase Extended Stay America hotel in Bloomington

Move would house individuals experiencing homelessness during the pandemic

Hennepin County is pursuing the purchase of the Extended Stay America hotel at American Boulevard and Lyndale Avenue in Bloomington for the purpose of housing individuals experiencing homelessness. Residents would move from a Holiday Inn (one of two Holiday Inns the County is currently leasing to provide safe shelter for homeless individuals during COVID-19) to the Extended Stay America.

The County wants to use the Extended Stay America building for the duration of the pandemic and plans to discontinue use of the Holiday Inn once residents move. Residents would all be elderly or have pre-existing conditions that put them at high risk for Covid-19.

The County would need to go through City of Bloomington approvals to comply with local laws and policies, and has committed to this as part of its purchase of the property. The County is using CARES Act dollars for the purchase.

The County has committed to no further expansion of its shelter use in Bloomington, and will try to consolidate shelter operations into one location by June 2021.

City staff will present more information to the Bloomington City Council and the community as it becomes available.
