The Community Development Department has new leadership. In March, Karla Henderson joined the City with a background in planning, infrastructure maintenance, community engagement and economic development. Her experience spans the private, nonprofit and local government sectors.
“I am humbled and honored to be Bloomington’s next Community Development Director and to join a team of extraordinary public servants at the City,” Henderson said. “There is much work to be done as we transition out of this pandemic and I am eager to serve the community.”
Her past public service includes work in several cities in Michigan, including Highland Park and Ann Arbor and for Detroit as the head of planning and facilities. In her first two weeks at the City, Henderson has defined her goals and laid the groundwork for achieving them.
“Several weeks into this position, I have discovered that the Community Development team is full of stellar and experienced staff members. So, I will make every effort to uplift their work while encouraging their professional development,” Henderson said. “I also plan to focus on expanding homeownership and affordable housing opportunities along with supporting the entrepreneurship and small business community in Bloomington.”

Karla’s quarantine hobby is collecting and caring for house plants. “I became obsessed with having plants in my home and actually became quite good at growing and then repotting them. I found it boosted my mood and reduced stress caused by having to be sitting at home.”
