Business expansion to bring jobs, space tech
Have you heard about Skywater Technology’s addition on 2401 East 86th Street? The 60,000-square-foot expansion that will cut into the existing parking lot, pictured above, will house a new clean room where out-of-this-world chips will be produced. The small, radiation-hardened chips are designed to withstand harsh outer space conditions. Much of the funding for the project comes from the U.S. Department of Defense.
The expansion is expected to bring an additional 30 to 50 jobs to Bloomington.
“We’re proud to be leading the way, right here from Bloomington, for the next generation of this critical technology used in defense applications, as well as in medical and space-based communications,” President Thomas Sonderman said.
Skywater designs and develops semiconductors at its Bloomington-based facility and currently employs more than 500 workers.
