Taking ESL classes at Creekside

They come for conversation, confidence and camaraderie, but most of all for the chance to improve their language skills. People from countries as diverse as China, Vietnam, Mexico and Russia share the same goal—learning English.

Creekside Community Center offers an English as a second language (ESL) class and anyone is welcome to attend. Small-group tutoring in a relaxed, informal setting builds basic conversation, writing and daily life skills.

“We have ESL students who come here, learn and get jobs to support their families,” Volunteer Mary Nessel said. “You don’t need to know another language to teach ESL, just have a caring heart. We care about our students and they are appreciative.”

English language learners are invited to practice and improve their language skills Mondays, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m., at Creekside, 9801 Penn Avenue South. For information, visit, call 952-563-4944 or email This program is free and does not provide English proficiency testing.
