A message from Mayor Tim Busse and the Bloomington City Council

The recent acts of violence and criminal activity, not only in Bloomington but in our neighboring cities, are unacceptable and concerning. Violence of any kind is not welcome in Bloomington, and those who commit violent acts will be held accountable. We can understand how incidents like these have a real impact on people’s feeling of safety.

Our local law enforcement and community partners work together to maintain safe neighborhoods so that quality of life remains high. And we are extremely proud of the work our Bloomington Police Department does every day to protect our community. In fact, crime hasn’t been this low in Bloomington since the 1970s. We're equally proud of the work they have done to support our local businesses and to build trust and cooperation with all members of the Bloomington community.

We are aware that the suspects in these recent cases are members of our Somali American community. But it is important to note that crime is committed by individuals not an entire group or culture. Our Somali American neighbors are residents, business owners, professionals and leaders who contribute to the economic and cultural vitality of our lives and community.

Violence has no place in Bloomington. We will not tolerate the actions of those who come to Bloomington to do harm. We will maintain a community where everyone feels safe, supported, healthy and connected.
